What do we have here then? - About Some-Place.net
How it came to be
Welcome to Some-Place.net - my little corner of the internet. For a little over 4 years I ran a blog here at some-place.net. The idea was to keep in touch with friends when we all moved off to Uni, and we ended up with a nice little blog ring of some 5 or 6 blogs.
Since then, a little thing called Facebook has stepped in and made having a blog for that purpose totally pointless. Also I graduated and grew up (a little). Thus, that blog died a death, and I purged the database.
Around mid-June 2008 it dawned on me that I still have this URL, and it’s not doing much. So I figured “Why not fire up a text editor, whack out a new CSS file and get a blog back up there?”. So I did. That was 3 days ago now - and I think I’ve done an okay job of resurecting a theme that was for some archaic version of Wordpress for use on the latest version.
What will you find here?
To be entirely honest, I’m not 100% sure yet. Along with the other sites I’m running - which are more closely tied to my identity - I wanted a place where I could semi-anonymously talk with some candor, rant, argue and generally join the legions of voices spewing opinion onto the internet. Expect a mixture of opinion, open discussion, and promotion of things and/or people I think are interesting and worth shouting about. Do not expect any deep insight into my personal life. This is not a live journal.
I hope you find something interesting here. Keep your eyes peeled, as I’m sure to cross promote some of my other projects on this site, once I’m sure they aren’t just going to crash and burn.
Some-Place.net
The site itself is powered by Wordpress v2.5.1 - and makes use of a fistfull of plugins; ExecPHP, LightBox, FancyArchives, SmartArchives, Gravatar, and Akismet to name a few.
Frontend design was done by myself - I went with a retro-modern feel. Hopefully I pulled it off. Don’t be shocked if things change over the coming days/weeks/months - I designed and modified this theme in 2 days whilst suffering from Glandular Fever. So it’s quite likely that once I’ve made a recovery I’ll be going back though the code and making a few tweaks.
Underneath that is a modified version of the BroadLeaf theme by Brendan Borlase - which itself is a modified version of FoliageMod by Derek Punsalan. I used BroadLeaf theme for the old version of Some-Place.net for the best past of 4 years, and it served me well. Sadly though, with the changes made to Wordpress in the past few years (especially since v2.3 which seemed to break everything) it’s now a little dated and I lot of tweaking to get stability. It’s seems a bit slow for my liking at the moment - I’m guessing the old cold for database calls is running far too many queries - it’s something I’m looking into, but for not the site is live and I’m happy it managed to get that far.
